Twice a year, on the equinox day , the end of the shadow describes a line : the equinox line (east-west direction)

A perpendicular of this line shows the geographic north ( direction of the shortest shadow at solar noon)

There is a difference between the magnetic north (given by a compass) and the geographic north (given by the direction of the shortest shadow)
This difference is called : Magnetic declination
